Maybe because I'm a Christian, or maybe because I was taught this way since birth but I really feel a lot for 'loving' people. The 'love' I'm talking about comes in many different forms. Like I 'love' people by spending time with them, eating with them, giving them snacks etc. That's my way of loving people I'm close to. As for the people who I don't know, who I come across in my daily life, I like making an impact.
Why am I talking about this? I attended a Youth Leaders' summit a few days back and on the last night, there was a speaker. He graduated from NUS. He was spurred to do good. He did good. He was sharing his story.
The $1 Project simply challenges every one to give away $1 to someone who needs it more, paying it forward, and see the $1 make a difference. Multiply it, and the impact multiplies! Its only $1, so why wait?!
- One Dollar ProjectOn the spot, he literally gave us a dollar each (please imagine how much, considering there were hundreds of people there) out from his own pocket. How many people are willing to give up approx. $300 in hope (he didn't force us) we gave it to someone who really needs it. I donated it to *Scape (no it's not just a building, it's a organization which facilitates youth-orientated activities) by the way. I realised how much $1 can do. So much.
You don't exactly have to volunteer yourselves to go overseas, or give hundreds of dollars to Red Cross whatnot. You can start with the aunties and uncles in the coffee shops selling tissue paper packets. It takes a lot of dignity and energy to just sell packets of tissues and earn a minimal amount.
Maybe you want something more practical, why not look for websites selling items which proceeds go to the needy in Singapore or overseas? Here's one a few of my friends have started. They sell guitar picks, postcards, motivational cards at a pretty reasonable price. The proceeds go to giving children a proper education, empowering them.
They are called the Dream Builders.
I hope that this post have given you some food for thought. Last but not least..
Have an awesome week ahead!
